Soay Markings:  White Muzzles

White muzzles are not necessarily a sign of
cross breeding!

SOA continues to work toward dispelling myths
and disinformation regarding Soay sheep.
The unaltered photo at right was donated to SOA
for use in the SOA Newsletter and on the SOA
website for this purpose.

This British Soay ewe is currently 12 years old
and is registered with Rare Breeds Survival Trust
(RBST) in England. At seven years of age this
ewe was imported to Washington State from
Quebec in October of 2000. At that time this
same ewe did not have a white muzzle. She has
acquired her white muzzle through the natural
aging process. This sign of aging may occur in
both American and British Soay sheep.

Just like a pet dog (or any other mammal with colored hair) can show white hairs on the muzzle as a sign of aging, so can Soay sheep.  This is not to be confused with the white spot on the nose that some Soays have, both British and American.
